Some of you know that when I quit Budget Travel in 2008, I decided to write a another novel. And some of you know that I sort of gave up on it, but not before finishing it. (Some of you probably wish I'd get back to channeling Kristin Scott Thomas.) I sent Nutmegger to a few agents, none of whom were into it, mostly because it didn’t fit a particular genre. That made my little novel sound sort of avant garde, when it’s a summer romp! So I put it in the proverbial drawer, unsure what to do with it.
I never set out to write The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier & Clay or The Thousand Autumns of Jacob de Zoet. I just wanted to write something fun, smart (if not especially literary), and short—the type of book that makes a three-hour plane trip pass in a flash.
I considered killing off a character (voilà, a mystery!) or adding zombies or recipes, but then I figured the heck with it—I’d self-publish Nutmegger as an e-book. I'm not going to promise that it'll blow you away, but I do think that if you like the way I write here, you’ll find it worth $8.99.
Click any of these links to read the synopsis and/or buy it:
••• Amazon (Kindle)
••• Barnes & Noble (Nook)
••• Smashwords (various formats, including mobile ones)
••• Apple (iPad, iPhone, iTouch)
••• Sony Reader Store (coming soon it seems like it'll never show up there, but I'm sure you can buy a compatible version on Smashwords)
If you do buy it, I promise to send you the first chapter or two of a book I did give up on, The Stud Ring—if I can get my co-author's blessing. Proof of purchase required; offer not available to immediate family.
If you don’t have a Kindle or Nook or whatever, you can always buy it as a PDF via Smashwords—and read it on a desktop or even print it at FedEx Office—although the formatting won’t be quite as nice.

Amy Helin designed the book’s cover, and Candice Stern designed the banner ad on TribecaCitizen.com. And while self-publishing is often described as easy, I found it confusing. If you’re considering it, I urge you to get help from 52 Novels.
