317. Time & Space (A New Refutation Of) by Digable Planets
Despite the evidence in this series of Mixtape posts, I do like hip-hop now and then, even if my taste is for a more laid-back era.
318. Fade Out Lines (The Avener Rework) by Phoebe Killdeer/The Avener
No clue what she's singing about and don't tell me.
319. Roxie by Renée Zellweger
Zellweger isn't a singer, and it's not clear whether she's a dancer—the edits in Chicago could induce a seizure—but she certainly put this song over. Watch it on video: There's poison in that sugar. I just wish the soundtrack included the full intro vamp.
320. How Come U Don't Call Me Anymore by Prince
Yet another B-side classic.
321. I Need Love by Luka Bloom
What seemed like a gimmick—Irish folksinger covers LL Cool J—has proved to have legs.
322. It Ain't Me Babe by Joaquin Phoenix & Reese Witherspoon
I still don't know how Phoenix and Witherspoon managed to sound so good, so right, as Johnny and June Carter Cash; their "Jackson" is at #104, but I prefer this cover of Johnny and June covering Bob Dylan. Then again, I might just like everything the two actors did in that movie. The proposal scene is possibly the best ever.
323. Baby I Love You So (12") by Colourbox
I never noticed this song much—it came out in 1983—until the last few years, when something about the groove resonated. Lorita Grahame sings the lyrics as if they're a standard, while the music does its space-cowboy thing.
324. Here by Alessia Cara
Only a teenager could care this much about a bad party.
325. Sometime Around Midnight by the Airborne Toxic Event
I like this song, with its schmaltz and propulsion, until he sings "You just have to see her" five times in a row—and then I love it.
326. Wave Goodbye by Kelley Stoltz
Heaven for us fans of the one-note piano riff.
327. Cowboy Junkies Lament by Cowboy Junkies
Townes Van Zandt wrote it for them. Another one that wouldn't have made my top 10 for years after it came out.
328. Our Love by Rhett Miller
I can never quite shake the impression that he was dared to include the word mezzanine in a song.
329. Drinkin' In My Sunday Dress by Maria McKee
Maria McKee doesn't cut loose—in her music—nearly enough.
